Indianapolis, May 8, 2014 – Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will host its second-annual McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day during National EMS Week, giving people a chance to interact with emergency personnel, take part in demonstrations and activities, and receive important safety information and exciting giveaways.

The Public Safety Awareness Day will take place on Tuesday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Indianapolis City Market, located at 222 E. Market St. in downtown Indianapolis. This free, family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity for the public to speak with first responders and other emergency providers in a non-emergency setting.

“We are excited to once again offer an opportunity for the public to see first-hand what it is that we do as a service, as well as our fellow public safety, health care and community agencies,” said Dr. Charles Miramonti, chief of Indianapolis EMS. “This day is not only a reminder of our fallen brothers and the risks that all first responders take, but also of the importance of serving and educating our community.”

The entire family is encouraged to browse the interactive displays that will be stationed in the West Plaza at City Market. Visitors can learn CPR, try on SWAT equipment and tour emergency vehicles, including an ambulance and a fire engine.

The McCormick & Medley Public Safety Awareness Day is named for Private Tim McCormick and Specialist Cody Medley, two Indianapolis EMS members killed in the line of duty in 2013. This commemorative event will take place during National EMS Week, May 18-24.

National EMS Week was first celebrated in 1974, when President Gerald Ford declared it at the request of the director of the Division of Emergency Medical Services, David R. Boyd. The week has since been celebrated by hospitals, fire departments, emergency medical services and others.
