Agency’s heart attack care among best in nation

Indianapolis, June 4, 2014 – Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a proud recipient of the 2014 Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Level Recognition Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) for its achievements in heart attack care. Indianapolis EMS was one of 100 agencies across the country, and only three in Indiana, to earn the Silver level of recognition, the highest ranking in the program.

“We’re extremely proud of this recognition for our excellent heart attack care,” said Dr. Charles Miramonti, chief of Indianapolis EMS. “It’s because of the work that our providers do on the streets each day that we are able to claim such a high level of success in STEMI treatment.”

An ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), or a heart attack, occurs after the blood supply to the heart is blocked for a prolonged period of time, resulting in a high risk for disability or death. Indianapolis EMS treats more than 100 STEMIs each year.
Indianapolis EMS emphasizes excellence in provider STEMI education, quick response to 911 calls, rapid STEMI identification through 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs), timely transport of STEMI patients to an appropriate health care facility for catheterization, and notification to these facilities before they receive the patient. The agency is also proficient in STEMI data collection and tracking of patient outcomes for continuous quality improvement. The agency met and/or exceeded all criteria set by AHA for its heart attack care in 2013.

“We’re definitely on the cutting edge of STEMI care, and we’ve been placing an emphasis on heart attack education, response and data collection for years,” said Dr. Dan O’Donnell, deputy medical director for Indianapolis EMS and an emergency medicine physician. “It’s great to receive an honor like this to let us know that we’re ahead of the curve.”

The Mission: Lifeline Award program recognizes EMS teams across the nation for their vital role in providing timely treatment for STEMI patients. This is the first year of the award program.
