Indianapolis, April 1, 2013 – St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and Indiana Blood Center announced today that Dr. Charles Miramonti, chief of Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Jessica Barth, vice president for Legal Affairs and chief counsel at Wishard-Eskenazi Health, have both been awarded the prestigious Achievement in Medicine (AIM) Award.

Dr. Miramonti was nominated by Charles Ford, administrative chief of Indianapolis EMS and a longtime colleague. Barth was nominated by Matthew Gutwein, president and CEO of Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Indiana Blood Center annually sponsors the award.

“Honoring two passionate, capable individuals with such different backgrounds speaks to the high level of professionalism and commitment across all of Wishard,” said Byron Buhner, president and CEO, Indiana Blood Center. “Indiana Blood Center applauds Jessica Barth and Dr. Miramonti for their leadership at Wishard-Eskenazi Health and its impact across our community.”

Dr. Miramonti became the first chief of Indianapolis EMS, a division of Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, in 2010, following the consolidation of emergency medical services, with the collaboration between Wishard and the Indianapolis Fire Department. In addition, he serves as an emergency medicine physician at Wishard and an assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Miramonti has served in numerous leadership capacities, including division chief for the IU School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine’s Division of Out of Hospital Care and deputy medical director for the Wishard Ambulance Service and the Indianapolis Fire Department. He is the founder and serves as chief medical officer of MESH, a groundbreaking partnership of health care entities working to identify shared risks and develop standardized training and programs to prepare organizations to work together during an emergency.

In 2012, Dr. Miramonti was appointed chairman of the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety. Since it was founded in 2003, the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety has provided a forum for Indianapolis-area hospitals to share information about best practices and work together to solve patient safety issues in Indianapolis and surrounding county hospitals.

Barth has served as Wishard Health Services’ vice president of Legal Affairs and chief counsel since 2004. She is responsible for Wishard’s Legal, Risk Management, Compliance and Medical Staff Affairs departments and the Office of Patient Experience. In 2007, she worked with community partners to establish the Wishard Medical-Legal Partnership, the first medical-legal partnership in Indiana. In 2010, she helped establish another patient-focused program, the Wishard Volunteer Advocates Program.

Barth is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, Executive Women in Healthcare and the Indianapolis Bar Association. She currently serves on the boards of Arts for Learning, Indiana Federal Community Defenders and the Indiana Health Advocacy Coalition, as well as the Indiana Hospital Association’s Council on Hospital Governance.

In 2008, she designed and taught a course in health law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and French from Indiana University-Bloomington and a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Michigan. She received her JD from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, graduating first in her class and serving as articles editor for the Indiana Law Journal.

The AIM Award recipient is selected by the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. The guild is a volunteer organization committed to raising funds for the services and programs of Wishard Health Services. Founded in 1907, the guild has raised more than $10 million for Wishard through the years. This is the 15th year for the AIM Award.

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s largest fundraising event is the annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. This year’s event is from April 27 through May 12. The show house is located at The Schnull-Rauch House, 3050 N. Meridian St. Tickets are $20 at the door and online and at Marsh Supermarkets for $18 prior to the opening.
